Bev cranking an ice cream maker
This year’s picnic will be held July 10, 2011 at the Blocksburg Town Hall.
The Ice Cream Picnic has been an annual event in Blocksburg for several decades. It is a revival of the celebrations held more than a hundred years ago when people traveled by horse and wagon for the Fourth of July picnics. Back then, the event lasted several days with people arriving the day before and leaving the day after. Since there was no refrigeration, ice was brought from Lassic Peak. It was a time to meet new friends and renew old acquaintances.
The picnic is a potluck affair and all the ice cream is hand-cranked. Since 1983, an auction has been held to raise money for the June Burgess Memorial Scholarship Fund. All of the items for the auction are donated, and you never know what you might find.
